Warne slams Strauss for not touring Bangladesh

CNEWS SYDNEY: Australia great Shane Warne has accused Andrew Strauss of showing a “lack of respect for Test cricket” following the England captain’’s decision to opt out of the tour of Bangladesh. Warne, speaking at Lord’’s here on Monday, said Strauss’’s absence for next month’’s two-Test series, when England are due to be captained by another opening batsman in Alastair Cook, would store up trouble for his side. Strauss’’s place could be taken by Michael Carberry and after helping the 29-year-old revive his career when captain of Hampshire, leg-spin legend Warne said he would like nothing more than to see his former county colleague give the selectors a huge headache. Strauss’’s decision has already provoked debate with many observers wondering why he needs to take a break during the Bangladesh tour given he is also set to miss the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean in April and March as he does not play in international cricket’’s shortest format. Carberry, yet to make his Test debut, received a ringing endorsement from his old captain. Earlier, England fast bowler Stephen Harmison agreed Strauss, who led England in their recent 1-1 series draw away to South Africa, should tour Bangladesh. “The captain should be there,” the Durham quick told a tv channel. “He was tired at the end of the South Africa tour but the other factor is he’’s England captain. Even if he got there two days before the first Test, the England captain should be there.”

Indian GDP estimated to grow by 7.2 %

CNEWS MUMBAI: India’’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is likely to grow by 7.2 per cent in 2009-10 as compared to the growth rate of 6.7 per cent achieved in 2008-09, despite a slight decline in the growth of the agriculture sector, data released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) said. In its Advance Estimates of National Income for 2009-10, the CSO said the GDP at factor cost at constant (2004-05) prices was likely to attain a level of Rs 44,53,064 crore in 2009-10 as against the Quick Estimates of GDP for 2008-09 of Rs 41,54,973 crore, released on January 29, 2010. The projected growth rate for the current financial year is lower than the estimate of 7.5 per cent made by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on January 29 on the basis of the encouraging second quarter growth of 7.9 per cent. The growth in the first half of 2009-10 has worked out to 7 per cent, which is impressive given the turmoil the world economy is going through. A statement from the CSO said the growth rate of 7.2 per cent in 2009-10 would be due to the growth rates over 5 per cent in sectors such as mining quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas and water supply, construction, trade, hotels, transport and communication, financing insurance, real estate and business services, and community, social and personal services.

Afghan avalanche kills 15, strands 100s

CNEWS KABUL: Avalanches in a mountain pass north of Kabul have killed at least 15 people, injured more than 50 and left hundreds stranded on blocked roads, Afghan officials said Tuesday. The avalanches took place Monday following heavy snows in the Salang Pass that links the Afghan capital with the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif and rescuers worked through the night to save more than 200 people, said Gen. Abdul Rahman Sayedkhail, Parwan provincial police chief. He said 54 people were injured. “It’’s very heavy snow. We”re cleaning the roads. So far, we have found 15 bodies, including women and children, he said. “There’’s still danger from avalanches there so that’’s why our work is a little slow,” Rahman said. About 100 Afghan soldiers were mobilized to join police and others in the rescue efforts, along with four helicopters, several ambulances and several bulldozers, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said. “Unfortunately there were more avalanches this morning which made our work a little difficult, but we are trying to rescue people,” he said. Military helicopters were dropping food packages to people stuck on snow-blocked roads, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemerai Bashary said.

Oil rises above $72 on weak dlr

CNEWS SINGAPORE: Oil recovered early losses to rise above $72 a barrel on Tuesday, buoyed by a weaker U.S. dollar and hopes that European Union leaders could soon cobble together a rescue package for ailing euro zone countries. Sentiment turned after the euro rose against the dollar, clambering off last week’’s 8-½-month low on speculation of a rescue for struggling Greece after European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet left a meeting of central bankers in Sydney early for a European Council meeting. U.S. crude for March delivery rose 24 cents to $72.13 a barrel by 0715 GMT, after hitting a morning low of $71.32. The contract settled up 70 cents at $71.89 per barrel on Monday. London Brent crude was up 35 cents to $70.46. “The recovery in crude is very much dollar-driven. There was a bounce in the euro due to short-covering, which helped boost oil prices,” said Michelle Kwek, an analyst at InformaGlobal Markets in Singapore. Crude had slumped in early trade, reversing a near 1 percent gain on Monday, as fears over the euro zone’’s sovereign debt woes had cast a pall over commodity and equity markets. Investors are cautiously awaiting the outcome of a special economy summit of European Union leaders in Brussels on Feb.11, as the bloc grapples with a debt crisis in Greece and budget concerns in other member states. Investors have looked to wider economic data over the past year for signs of a recovery in the global economy and a potential rebound in flagging energy demand. Japan’’s Nikkei average edged down to a two-month closing low on Tuesday after Wall Street ended Monday below the10,000-level for the first time since November. Over the past year, oil prices have frequently weakened as the dollar firmed, at times signalling a flight to safer havens by investors. Crude has lost nearly 10 percent this year, dragged down by data showing bulging fuel stockpiles in the United States despite cold weather, concerns about slower Asian demand if China further tightens its monetary policy, and more recently, jitters over Europe’’s financial stability. The market will also await the release of weekly U.S. oil inventory data from the American Petroleum Institute (API), due at 1500 GMT, for further clues on the recovery in demand from the world’’s top energy consumer. Rising CNewspolitical tension could also underpin oil prices. International pressure for new sanctions against Iran grew on Monday after Tehran announced plans to make higher-enriched uranium and add 10 nuclear sites in a year, reawakening Western fears it wants to develop atom bombs.

Israeli minister calls for tough Iran sanctions

CNEWS JERUSALEM: A senior Israeli minister called on Tuesday for the international community to adopt tough sanctions against arch-foe Iran over its controversial nuclear programme. “The coming month is decisive,” Silvan Shalom, vice premier, told public radio. “It is time the international community imposes tough sanctions against Iran, even if Russia and China do not go along.” He was referring to two of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, who have previously expressed opposition to Iran sanctions. “The international community must decide if it will continue to harbour illusions on the so-called Iranian cooperation or if it will impose real sanctions against Iran and its nuclear programme,” said Shalom.
