CNEWS SYDNEY: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to appoint former captain Waqar Younis as coach of the national cricket team and a contract in this regard has been sent from the chief operating officer to Waqar, who is currently in Sydney. The 40-year-old Waqar was the bowling and fielding coach of the Pakistan team on the tour of Australia whom now the PCB has formally offered to be a new coach in place of Intikhab Alam. Waqar Younis, who took 373 wickets in Test cricket and 416 in One-day Internationals, has confirmed the news of contacting and offering him the coach assignment from the board. However, Waqar said that he would soon make a decision in this regard. Waqar has been offered to be the coach till December 2011. If Waqar Younis agrees, then he will be the coach of the Pakistan team in the third Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies this year.

CNEWS LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt has revealed that two Pakistani cricketers are involved in match-fixing and the International Cricket Council (ICC) has provided the evidence. Ijaz Butt said that he cannot tell the names of these cricketers but they are not included in the present team. Ijaz Butt was speaking at the press conference held here at the Gaddafi Stadium for announcing the names of 30 probable players for the Twenty20 World Cup. However, when asked about the news regarding wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal’s involvement in match-fixing, Ijaz Butt first said that the final meeting of the committee, probing Pakistan’s embarrassing defeat on the tour of Australia, will be held in Lahore on Febraury 28 and he would make any comment after the report would come out and then the players included in the probable list may be dropped on recommendation of the enquiry committee. Replying to further questions on match-fixing, the PCB chairman said he never said that the match-fixing is not done but it is difficult to prove it. He said that he was amazed to see when the ICC provided the evidence. When various questions were fired on him, he confirmed that not the officials but players are involved in matchc-fixing but they are not the part of the present team. Ijaz Butt said that he would not mention the names of these players not event to the standing committees of sports. However, he said that action has been taken against these players.

CNEWS DUBAI: UAE royal Sheikh Mubarak bin Mohammed al-Nahyan passed away on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi, state news agency WAM reported. The Presidential Affairs Ministry has declared three days for official mourning starting on Wednesday, WAM said. “The ministry expressed profound sorrow over the demise of Sheikh Mubarak and extended solace to the bereaved family. May Almighty God rest his soul in peace,” the news agency said. Funeral prayers will be performed on Thursday after noon prayers at Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Mosque in Al Bateen, WAM said. Mourners will pay their respects at Al Mushrif Palace, the news agency added.

CNEWS Tech: Shakil Awan, candidate of Pakistan Muslim League-N, is on way to a clear victory in today’s by-election in NA-55, unofficial results received from majority of the polling stations indicate. Vote count started following the completion of polling for by-election in NA-55 constituency here amid cries of foul play by Chief of Awami Muslim League, Sheikh Rashid. Shakil Awan was in lead right from receipt of the initial results (unofficial). His lead against Sheikh Rashid grew more and more as results continued to pour in. During the day a couple of incidents of scuffle were reported. However, the overall law and order situation remained satisfactory. Pakistan Muslim League-N in reaction to Sheikh Rashid’s allegations of rigging said the latter is raising hue and cry as a way of face saving in view of his defeat in sight. Early morning rain in the city affected the polling arrangements but later voters starting coming out as clouds started to clear the sky. The turnout grew with time and picked momentum towards the end of polling hours. The overall situation remained peaceful throughout the polling except for a few separate incidents of fights reported during the day. Blaming the state machinery for alleged rigging, Sheikh Rashid said PML-N may go ahead and do whatever it wants, he will prove himself a tough competition. Meanwhile, Jamat-e-Islam candidate Dr. Kamal expressed satisfaction on the election process and advised Sheikh Rashid to come forward with evidence of the alleged rigging.

CNEWS Tech: The political temperature of constituency NA-55 has touched its peak as electoral process of by-polls entered the last day on Monday. Meanwhile, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif is expected to hold a rally and AML chief Sheikh Rashid, PTI head Imran Khan and Jamat-e-Islami’s Munawar Hassan will also address public gatherings. A total of 23 candidates are contesting the by-polls at constituency NA-55 of Rawalpindi including Awami Muslim League (AML)’s chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Malik Shakeel Awan, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s Ejaz Khan Jazi, Jamat-e-Islami’s Dr Muhammad Kamal and Awami National Party (ANP)’s Haji Muhamamd Javed. Polling-related work has been completed to ensure peaceful process. However, 49 out of total 250 polling stations have been declared ‘sensitive’, and additional police force will be deployed in these areas. Moreover, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed will attend public gathering at Liaqat Bagh, Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Syed Munawar Hasan at Bani Chowk while PTI chief Imran Khan will address the public gathering at College Road. CNEWS NEW DELHI: India needs to urgently import 3-5 million tonnes of white sugar and may ship in rice to calm food prices, a top aide of the prime minister said, signalling a tighter supply situation than previous estimates. The hurry by the world’’s top consumer of the sweetener comes three weeks after the Indian sugar mills industry body cut its import forecast. A Singapore-based dealer said Indian imports would support global and New York raw sugar futures SBHO which fell to an eight-week low on Thursday and have ebbed from recent peaks on weak demand and new supply from Europe and Brazil. “So the news from India could be seen in a supportive way,” he said. India has faced falling output of key crops like sugar and widespread protests against food prices that are up 18 percent because the worst monsoon in 37 years damaged crops in 2009. The new sugar season began with a record low opening stock of 2 million tonnes on Oct. 1. India may produce 14 million tonnes this year, significantly lagging its demand of 22 million tonnes, the prime minister’’s economic advisory panel said on Friday. The chairman of the panel, former central bank governor C. Rangarajan, said it would take up to three months for soaring food prices to ease even with the imports. The panel said that even if consumption dips, “the stock position will rapidly approach the nil level” before high-demand for sweets during the festival season that begins in autumn. “Under these conditions, it is imperative that urgent steps are taken to import white sugar to the extent of the shortfall in availability, which may be assessed at somewhere in the region of 3 to 5 million tonnes,” a statement from the panel said. “It is therefore important that government takes the initiative to start the process.”
