CNEWS AHMEDABAD: AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis hammered centuries to set up South Africa’’s consolation 90-run victory over India in the third and final one-day international on Saturday. De Villiers cracked a quickfire 102 not out for his sixth hundred and skipper Kallis a solid unbeaten 104 for his 17th century as South Africa posted their highest one-day total of 365-2 against India. De Villiers’’s century came off just 58 deliveries, the seventh-fastest in one-day cricket. India, who rested openers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, and pacemen Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra after gaining an unbeatable 2-0 lead on Wednesday, were all out for 275 in the day-night match in Ahmedabad. South African paceman Dale Steyn did the maximum damage as he finished with three wickets for 37 runs, including those of well-set Virat Kohli (57) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (nine) in one over. Seamer Lonwabo Tsotsobe bagged three wickets, while spinners Johan Botha and Roelof van der Merwe took two wickets apiece. The South African bowlers were superbly backed by wicket-keeper Mark Boucher, who finished with five dismissals. Suresh Raina (49), Rohit Sharma (48) and Ravindra Jadeja (36) were the other main scorers for India. De Villiers and Kallis made the most of India’’s depleted attack, adding 173 for the unfinished third wicket with a wide range of strokes. They built on impressive efforts from openers Hashim Amla (87) and Loots Bosman (68). Kallis hit three sixes and five fours in his 94-ball knock, reaching his hundred in the penultimate over with a six off fast bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth. De Villiers, who made an unbeaten 114 in the previous match in Gwalior on Wednesday, completed his second successive hundred with a four off part-timer Sharma in the final over. He hit three sixes and 11 boundaries. Amla and Bosman set the pace after their team elected to bat on a good track, dominating the Indian attack to add 113 for the opening wicket. Bosman fell playing strokes, caught at long-off while attempting a big shot off Yousuf Pathan. Bosman hit four sixes and seven fours in his 46-ball knock.

Modi denies SA to host Champions League

Tags:

CNEWS LONDON: Champions League Twenty20 chairman Lalit Modi says no definite decision has been taken on where this year’’s event will take place. Modi confirmed that the tournament would run from 10-26 September but said the CSA announcement was premature. The competition will feature domestic Twenty20 sides from India, England, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies and South Africa but the dates clash with the end of the English domestic season. CSA said on its official website that it was “their turn” to stage the event. The statement has since been taken down. Modi said: “I am the chairman of the Champions League and what we have done is request a few of the boards to let us know if they are ready to host the Champions League. “The Champions League has been conceived to be a travelling tournament, we have also spoken to Australia, the ECB and the BCCI to affirm whether they are ready to host. “I think what happened is the South African board approved that they would like to host it and South Africa definitely is in hot contention for that without doubt. The decision is still to be decided upon by the Champions League board.” Modi also said that the composition of the event had still not been decided upon.

SA need 341 runs to avoid innings defeat against India

Tags:

CNEWS KOLKATA: The third day of the Kolkata Test went to Venkatsai Laxman and Mahendra Singh Dhoni as South Africa require 341 runs to avoid an innings defeat with two days remaining in the second and final Test. The tourists, trailing by 347 runs, were six for no loss in their second knock when play was called off due to bad light after just five deliveries from Zaheer Khan. India’’s powerful batting boosted their chances of squaring the series after they lost the first Test in Nagpur by an innings and six runs. A drawn series will also enable Dhoni’’s men to retain their number one position in the official Test rankings. Laxman hit 143 and Dhoni made 132 as India piled up a record 643-6 before declaring their first innings shortly before stumps on the third day at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India’’s total was their highest against South Africa, surpassing the 627 during the Chennai Test in 2008. Laxman and Dhoni put on 259 for the unbroken seventh wicket as India lost just one wicket, of nightwatchman Amit Mishra, during the day. Laxman, who missed the Nagpur Test due to a finger injury, played some trademark pulls and drives for his 15th Test century and the fourth at the Eden Gardens. Dhoni clobbered part-time spinner Jean-Paul Duminy for two sixes in a row and another off Paul Harris to underline India’’s dominance over the second-ranked Proteas. There were four centuries in India’’s innings after Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar made hundreds on Monday. The South Africans, who made 296 in their first knock, squandered a few chances in the field, which could prove costly as they seek their first Test series victory in India for nearly a decade. Resuming at 342-5, Laxman flicked a couple of boundaries in the first over of the day by Dale Steyn, who conceded 115 runs while taking just one wicket. Laxman faced 260 balls during his nearly six-hour stay at the wicket. Mishra (28) enjoyed a brief flourish and a couple of reprieves before falling to an ambitious upper cut which was plucked by Jacques Kallis off Morne Morkel (2-115) at second slip. Mishra hit five fours in his 38-ball knock. Four South African bowlers conceded more than 100 runs each, with left-arm spinner Harris being the most expensive with figures of 1-182 from 50 overs.

Warne slams Strauss for not touring Bangladesh

Tags:

CNEWS SYDNEY: Australia great Shane Warne has accused Andrew Strauss of showing a “lack of respect for Test cricket” following the England captain’’s decision to opt out of the tour of Bangladesh. Warne, speaking at Lord’’s here on Monday, said Strauss’’s absence for next month’’s two-Test series, when England are due to be captained by another opening batsman in Alastair Cook, would store up trouble for his side. Strauss’’s place could be taken by Michael Carberry and after helping the 29-year-old revive his career when captain of Hampshire, leg-spin legend Warne said he would like nothing more than to see his former county colleague give the selectors a huge headache. Strauss’’s decision has already provoked debate with many observers wondering why he needs to take a break during the Bangladesh tour given he is also set to miss the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean in April and March as he does not play in international cricket’’s shortest format. Carberry, yet to make his Test debut, received a ringing endorsement from his old captain. Earlier, England fast bowler Stephen Harmison agreed Strauss, who led England in their recent 1-1 series draw away to South Africa, should tour Bangladesh. “The captain should be there,” the Durham quick told a tv channel. “He was tired at the end of the South Africa tour but the other factor is he’’s England captain. Even if he got there two days before the first Test, the England captain should be there.”
